Five Takeaways - Twin Ports Summer Jam (2025)

After watching the first day of the 2025 Twin Ports Summer Jam at Duluth East High School, I've come to the following five conclusions/thoughts:

1) The Superior Spartans looked good, and so did senior Calvin Anderson. Superior ended up winning the Summer Jam tournament, becoming back-to-back champs. Calvin Anderson looked really good, I would say he made a legit case to be considered the best player above Highway 8 in Wisconsin. His footwork and ability to play off two feet with his finishes was extremely impressive. It was clear to see what the scholarship schools who have offered him and liking with his inside-out versatility. Drew Eisel made a ton of winning plays for the Spartans and just did a lot of things you like to see. It seemed like everyone on the team was willing to do whatever it took to win on Monday. Role players knocking down shots and getting layups. It was a good team showing. The Spartans were 9-1 in Lake Superior Conference play last season, but unfortunately were only 3-6 against teams from Wisconsin which hurt their playoff seeding. I imagine that record will be better in 2025-26. If they can get a home playoff game this season, that will give them good home court advantage in a tough Division 1 Sectional.

2) Duluth East has a couple new names that need to be added to our Player Rankings. Ty Nyberg looked really good and solidified himself as a top senior. Nyberg was already listed on our 2026 list, but he made a handful of contested threes look effortless. Simon Winkels definitely played himself into a place where he'll need to be considered in the next 2027 rankings. The 6'6" stretch forward hit a couple of threes. I'd like to see him do a little but more on the court, but it appears that he's still growing. Becoming more physical and aggressive will help his game, and East, during the rest of his career. A name that will be added to the 2028 rankings is Ty Schingen, a 6'1" guard. Schingen played really hard on both sides of the ball and seemed to always be making heady plays. He seemed like one of those guys you just wanted to keep on the court because good things seem to happen.

3) Hibbing has an impressive amount of talent returning for this season. Hibbing made the biggest turnaround in the Northwoods going from an overall record of 4-23 during the 2023-24 season to a 19-10 record in 2024-25. The Bluejackets are headlined by juniors Ray Brau and Jack Bottoms. Add in a lot of length with seniors, Adam Reckmeyer (6'4") and Evan Bolden (6'3"), along with 6'3" junior, Grant Toewe. As a team, I thought they played really well together. Brau got a lot of post touches, and was a more than willing passer when the double-teams started coming. Guys were cutting off ball and getting easy layups. Bottoms was able to get hot and help them win a few games. Last season they made a run and lost to Duluth Denfeld in the Sectional Championship. I would assume with more experience coming back that they will be towards the top of the Lake Superior Conference.

4) Duluth Denfeld replacing Marnaries Ferguson won't be easy, but the Hunters have some nice pieces. Monday was the best performance I've seen from Lee Brooks, and it seemed like he got a stop or a bucket any time Denfeld needed it. Carter Brown averaged a double-double as a sophomore. The 6'5" wing/forward still has a lot of potential, but he seems to be getting better and better every time I watch him. He got to the hoop really well at Summer Jam. Talking about improving, you have to mention 6'6" junior Antonio Brown. His finishing and rebounding has gotten significantly better since last summer. Had 10 games last season where he scored double figures, along with shooting 60.8% from the floor for the entire year. With two more years to develop, I assume he'll start to see some double-teams coming his way. One name to really keep an eye on in the class of 2029 is Joey Dupree Jr. He's small currently, but he's not afraid to go at older and bigger players.

5) There is a good chance that the Cherry Tigers can win their Sectional and make another State Tournament berth. There is a lot of scoring gone from last season but can the Tigers remain relevant in Northern Minnesota? There were a ton of questions when Isaac Asuma graduated and went to the Gophers, now the same questions arise with Noah Sundquist and Carson Brown graduating. With only Isaiah Asuma at Summer Jam, it was tough to get a real grasp of this question. Since they were missing Noah Asuma, that put a ton of focus on Isaiah. He was still able to get to some of his spots and create for others. There were plenty of nice moves to the paint and tough shots that he made look easy. The junior guard owns an offer from Minnesota-Duluth. Bringing in 6'2" senior Noah Asuma should help open a few more things up for everyone. Lack of depth might be more of a concern this season than it has been in the past. If role players can knock down open shots that they will get, that could help the Tigers make another push. They breezed through their Sectional last season with scores of 105-51, 104-40, 87-53, and 77-56. Another State Tournament berth could be possible if they are playing their best basketball at the end of the season.

Top 10 College Prospects (2025)

This is based completely on my opinion on what players from the Northwoods have games that translate the best to college basketball. Potential does play a factor into being a "prospect" going into college.

1. Gavin Gores (Cumberland):
I don't think there is any arguing for the top spot this year. The 6'10" 2025 graduate was the Heart O' North Conference Player of the Year. Averaged 34.1 points per game and 14.0 rebounds per game. A playing style that hasn't been seen north of Highway 8 in Wisconsin in awhile. Capable of stepping out and being a stretch four at the college level. I've heard some really good things about him coming out of the summer practices at Wyoming so far. Committed to Wyoming.

2. Brooks Johnson (Duluth Marshall): A very physical and athletic 6'5" wing/forward in the 2025 class. Put up big numbers while at Duluth Marshall during his career, averaged 32.1 points per game and 16.6 rebounds per game during his senior season. Through AAU during high school that coaches were given a better look at what he can do, probably more so than playing in high school. Brooks has always seemed to play with a motor and some passion for the game. Committed to Minnesota-Duluth.

3. Calvin Anderson (Superior): Long and lanky wing who can play multiple positions on the court. Scores in a variety of ways. He's been good in high school, but I do think his best basketball is still in front of him. I think once he adds a light weight in college he will really come into his own. Currently holds Division 2 offers from Michigan Tech, Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota-Moorhead, and Missouri S&T.

4. Jaxon Boschee (Bemidji): The recruitment for the 6'3" guard has started to gain momentum. He's probably one of the better players on this list of being able to score with the ball in his hands, in a variety of ways. His really quick shooting release allows him to get tough shots off. Can shoot it from deep, or get to his spots for mid-range jumpers. On top of shooting abilities, he's a good passer as well. Current offers from Minot State and Northern Michigan.

5. Jacob MacPhee (Marquette): All-around great athlete in the 2025 class. Football, basketball, and track & field stud. Has some work to do, but no without a question he is going to play with a motor. I think he's a perfect fit for what Michigan Tech does. Rebounds the ball at an extremely high rate and able to finish very well. Capable of stepping outside and knocking down threes. Committed to Michigan Tech.

6. Ethan Marta (Westwood): Scored his 1000th career point as a junior. Helped lead his high school team to a Michigan State Tournament Semi-Final appearance. Has been having a great summer playing with Zero Star Basketball out of Marquette. Haven't heard of any offers yet, but has been playing well at prospect camps (according to other reports). I wouldn't be surprised to hear of some D2 offers coming in shortly.

7. Ray Brau (Hibbing): The 6'7" forward rebounds the ball at an extremely high rate. He's consistently been one of the better 2027 prospects in Minnesota. Has great hands and has great touch around the hoop. Has a "below the rim" style of play, but he's able to get to his spots and use his body well. I don't know what level he'll end up at, but I believe he'll be extremely efficient wherever he goes.

8. Stephen McGee (Greenway): The 6'9" 2026 forward has been having a good spring AAU season playing with the Minnesota Comets. Good shot blocker, really uses his length very well. Tends to be a little more perimeter oriented on the offensive end. There is a lot of potential left on the table for McGee and if he ends up at the right spot, he could have a really good college career. Recently committed to Northern Michigan.

9. Isaiah Asuma (Cherry): The 2027 guard has had a good AAU showing so far this year, and it will be expected to translate for Cherry this upcoming season. Great passing abilities, but also athletic enough to finish around bigger defenders. Has helped the Tigers become one of the best small school programs in Minnesota. Has a great muscle build on him already. Currently holds an offer from Minnesota-Duluth.

10. Kamden Kroll (Northwestern): The 2027 wing has a chance to really make some moves in the coming years. He's going to start being asked to do more and that should open some things up for him. 1st-Team Heart O' North selection as a sophomore after averaging 15.3 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. When I've watched him play it has always looked really smooth and under control. Has had a really impressive summer playing with Wisconsin Playmakers and his high school team. Haven't seen anything about offers for him yet (still very early), but I would assume by spring they will start picking up.

To be included on this list you must be in one of the following graduating classes:
2025, 2026, 2027, or 2028.

*A reminder that these are my opinions, these rankings will never be 100% accurate.

Five Takeaways - Ashland High School Summer League (2025)

After watching a couple of nights of the 2025 Ashland High School Summer League, I've come to the following five conclusions/thoughts:

1) Mellen was the most impressive Northern Lights Conference team competing in the summer league. No real surprise hearing this considering they won the conference titles in 2025 and return the conference POY in Xander Beeksma. Returning All-Northern Lights Honorable Mention selections in Bryce Maier and Hayden Lawver should help make the Granite Diggers a team to beat in the upcoming season. The first game I watched them play in summer league they lost to Division 3 Ashland by 1 point in overtime. They have a bunch of very good athletes and don't get rattled by a ton of different tempos being thrown at them. Add in some younger talent, and that should free some things up for the names listed above. Hurley wasn't in the summer league, but they should be the top competitor for Mellen.

2) Chequamegon senior, Cooper Michalski, looks like he is one of the best seniors in Northern Wisconsin. The Screaming Eagles aren't exactly known as a basketball powerhouse, but they tend to have a player every couple of years who can play. Cooper excels with his athleticism, but has really improved his jump shot over the last couple of years. Measured at 6'4", he makes himself an one-on-one matchup nightmare, especially after he led the conference in scoring as a junior at 23.0 points per game. With help from other seniors (Jarrett Heckendorf, Marcus Purdy, and Ian Schloer) Chequamegon should be able to improve last years win total of three, but they will need to be locked in. The Marawood-North Conference has a really deep senior class, so there will be a lot of good battles.

3) Ashland is probably a year away from being really competitive. They should show signs of improvement this season, but it appears their best talent is in their sophomore and junior classes. Gavin Greene (HM All-Heart O' North) should become more of a focal point this season and the 6'5" junior had some really good games this summer on the AAU circuit. If he can start to dominate games (not just scoring) on a consistent basis, the Oredockers could become a tough out over the next two seasons. Potentially their biggest concern is going to be a lack of height, but I expect that the toughness is going to be there from them. The Heart O' North was a very senior dominated conference last season, this could be a year where you see a little more shake up in the standings.

4) It will be interesting to see improvements from Hayward in year two of the up-tempo style of play. They looked more settled in with it during summer league, but that's always tough to know what you are going against. Picking up the tempo usually takes time for younger athletes to figure out and not drown in choice. Last season they scored the 5th amount of points (69.75 offensive points per game), but also allowed the 2nd most points (78.67 defensive points per game) in the Northwoods. If they can shrink that gap, or flip those numbers, I'd assume they will be on an upward trajectory. Senior Lucas Hansen (2nd-Team All-Heart O' North) and sophomore Adel Amparo should help the team stay on course.

5) Aaron Christenson from Drummond will be a junior to keep an eye on. I'll be excited to see how he does following a sophomore season where he was a 1st-Team All-Northern Lights Conference selection. He did a little bit of everything during summer league, and was a big reason why Drummond won/was competitive. The 6'1" guard made a lot of tough threes, got to the hoop well, and rebounded the ball at a high rate (especially offensively). My thoughts when recruiting players from small high schools was they needed to fit three criteria: 1) score/make your teammates better, 2) you should be getting a lot of rebounds, and 3) defend at a high rate/guard the other teams best player. Christenson appears to be a tough enough player that he could do all of those things by the end of his high school career.
