WIAA Playoff Assignments

The WIAA recently released what the playoff assignments will look like heading into this upcoming school year. There are plenty of changes being made, primarily due to COVID-19 disrupting the local sectionals last season. This played a part in multiple teams losing a chance to make a run to the state tournament.


Let's look at what northern sectional teams will be affected by the changes heading into the 2021-2022 season.


Changes in Division 1 - Sectional 1

-    Holmen, La Crosse Central, Menomonie, and River Falls moved to Division 2.

-    Kimberly, Neenah, and Oshkosh West have all been switched to this sectional after staying in Division 1 but were in a different sectional last season.

-    Bay Port, De Pere, Green Bay East, Green Bay Preble, Green Bay Southwest, and Pulaski were removed from this sectional.

-    Appleton East and Appleton West are back in this sectional after not participating in the WIAA Playoffs last season.


Changes in Division 2 - Sectional 1

-    Altoona, Amery, Baldwin-Woodville, Black River Falls, Ellsworth, Osceola, Somerset, and West Salem moved to Division 3.

-    Holmen, La Crosse Central, Menomonie, and River Falls return to this sectional after participating in Division 1 last season.

-    Fox Valley Lutheran, New London, and Shawano have all been switched to this sectional after staying in Division 2 but were in a different sectional last season.


Changes in Division 3 - Sectional 1

-    Aquinas, Cameron, Chequamegon, Colby, Cumberland, Durand, Ladysmith, Mondovi, Neillsville, Osseo-Fairchild, and Unity moved to Division 4.

-    Adams-Friendship, Altoona, Amery, Baldwin-Woodville, Black River Falls, Ellsworth, Mauston, Osceola, Somerset, West Salem, and Wisconsin Dells return to this sectional after participating in Division 2 last season.

-    Viroqua has been switched back to this sectional after staying in Division 3 but were in a different sectional last season.


Changed in Division 3 - Sectional 2A

-    Bonduel and Oconto moved to Division 4.

-    Clintonville, Freedom, Little Chute, Waupaca, and Xavier return to this sectional after participating in Division 2 last season.


Changes in Division 4 - Sectional 1

-    Abbotsford, Athens, Clear Lake, Edgar, Flambeau, Hurley, Marathon, Spencer, and Thorp moved to Division 5.

-    Cameron, Chequamegon, Durand, Ladysmith, Mondovi, Neillsville, Osseo-Fairchild, and Unity return to this sectional after participating in Division 3 last season.

-    Plum City/Elmwood and Whitehall have been switched to this sectional after staying in Division 4 but were in a different sectional last season.


Changes in Division 5 - Sectional 1

-    Athens, Clear Lake, Flambeau, Hurley, and Thorp return to this sectional after participating in Division 4 last season.

-    Eau Claire Immanuel, Mercer, Prentice, and Rib Lake have been switched to this sectional after staying in Division 5 but were in a different sectional last season.

As the season gets closer, we will predict what teams we favor to make it out of the northern sectionals. Once the playoff seedings are announced, we will make our playoff predictions for the local sectional.
