Five Takeaways - UMD Sweet Sixteen (2026)

After watching the 2026 University of Minnesota-Duluth Sweet Sixteen, I've come to the following five conclusions/thoughts:

1) Colton Nesbitt will be a fascinating player to watch in the Big Rivers Conference throughout the next two seasons. Going into Monday I was unaware of who River Falls' Colton Nesbitt (2028) was, but it doesn't take long for 6'7" guys to stand out on basketball courts. In his first game of the day, Nesbitt was challenged by having to match up with Hibbing's big fella in 6'8" Ray Brau. Nesbitt was able to show some versatility during the two games that I watched (they played Mountain Iron-Buhl in the second game). I'm not sure that I saw him make a three-pointer, but there wasn't much else that he didn't do. He's a guy who will rim run one possession and then lead the break the next. He's more than capable of attacking from the perimeter, but also does a great job of moving without the ball and finding gaps in the defense. At 6'7" he has soft hands and was a good passer. The main thing that stood out was how he was making things challenging for the previously mentioned Brau (who holds multiple D2 offers). It's easy to understand why he is a bit under the radar currently, he averaged 5.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game as a sophomore on a senior heavy team. Those numbers will continue to go up as he gets more consistent and develops his game even more.

2) Multiple underclassmen guards should impact their teams during the upcoming season. When I looked at underclassmen guards, Joseph Dupree (2029) is the first name that comes to mind since he saw the most playing time of the group. Dupree started for Duluth Denfeld as a freshman, and was their fourth leading scorer at 4.8 points per game. Expect him to play a bigger role this season and should be relied upon to have more of an impact with the graduation of Lee Brooks. Cam Jolma (2029) of Ashland has really stood out so far this summer when I've watched him, and at UMD was no different. He excels as a decision maker and tends to lift up the other players on the court. Ball screens, transition, and spot up three-pointers are the main areas I've seen him standout. The combination of those skills brings something to the Ashland team that should make them tougher to defend. Jolma was on varsity last season, but only played in 9 game seeing most of his action came at the JV level. Jacob Sykes (2030) of Duluth East is quite possibly the name I'm the most excited about of this group of guards. He played up a grade with the Playmakers North 15U team this offseason, which should help him transition to varsity. Sykes is another guard who is at his best when pushing the ball in transition and able to be a decision maker. All three of these guards should be fun to watch over the next 3-4 years.

3) Braxdyn Male is making a name for himself in the 2028 class. Esko had tough schedule for the 2025-2026 season and they were a youthful roster at the beginning. That made way for Male to step in as a sophomore and have an immediate impact. Not only that, but he finished the season being named Pine Journal Played of the Year and Duluth News Tribune First Team All-Area. Now we're halfway through the summer and the 6'1" guard has started to catch the eyes of colleges and recruiting sites. While at the Sweet Sixteen tournament, Male was able to show some athleticism and tough shot making that I previously haven't seen. He's physical enough to know how to get defenders to the spot he wants them and then make a move for a quality shot. Many examples of the same move happened where he would bump the defender into the mid-range and then hit them with a step-back for an easy jumper. One of my favorite things about watching him play is how unselfish he is with the basketball. On top of everything, it looked like his three-point shot was the most fluent I've seen and he looked extremely comfortable shooting.

4) Hibbing seems to have picked up right where they left off. There were moments where I have tried to prepare myself to not be quite as high on Hibbing heading into this season. It appears none of that self-talk has worked. It will be a senior dominated roster and hard to bet against the duo of Jack Bottoms and Ray Brau. Bottoms is a 1000 point scorer, while Brau reached the 2000 point/1000 rebound milestone. Brau will be one of the premier players in the area this season and is sure to generate a ton of attention from opponents, considering he saw tons of double teams in the post as a junior. Bottoms is a lefty guard who has a knack for making big and tough shots. Grant Toewe and Rocco Rossini were two other seniors who played very well for Hibbing at the tournament. Toewe provides some good size (listed at 6'4") from the wing position and should play a key role doing a little bit of everything if Hibbing is going to make a playoff run. Rossini hit some really big shots for Hibbing in their game against River Falls. It seemed like any chance River Falls had at making a run, there was Rossini knocking down a spot up three pointer. If all of those players can be the best at what they do, plus a couple of others stepping in to new roles, Hibbing should be a really tough out.

5) There was good size from the 2027 class who could all play college ball. Some of the 2027 Top Players were on display and they all looked the part of players who could help college programs. Ray Brau is probably the most well-known name in this group, and probably rightfully so considering he's a 6'8" forward. He's garnered scholarship interest, and at this point it seems to be a no-brainer that he is a scholarship level forward. Carter Brown gained attention after a junior season where he made a huge jump, potentially putting himself in a position to get scholarship offers. Of the names listed, he probably has the biggest potential. Kam Kroll brings some really good size being a 6'3" guard/wing while also being a lefty. He's a three-sport athlete, which makes me think that his best basketball is still ahead of him once he begins to play one sport. Gavin Greene is a 6'5" and could play the role of a point forward. Combining his skill set with his size make him intriguing, considering he typically spends most of his time on the perimeter. Simon Winkel is probably the least known player, but provides the ability to be a stretch forward at the college level. Almost every time I watch him play I walk away thinking about how much the guy he was guarding struggled to get anything going. All of these guys look the part of guys who should be on recruiting radars.

Top Ten College Prospects (25-26)

This is based completely on my opinion on what players from the Northwoods have games that translate the best to college basketball. Potential does play a factor into being a "prospect" going into college.

1. Carter Brown (Duluth Denfeld): There is nobody in the area who made as big of a jump from last season to this season. The 2027 wing/forward provides size at 6'6" along with the skill set to play on the perimeter with the ball in his hands. This season he showed that he was capable to play with the ball or without the ball. Averaged 28.1 points and 13.8 rebounds per game as a junior, while shooting 38.8% from three. A jump from 13.4 points and 8.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He did a little bit of everything for the Hunters this season and its scary to say, but it seems that there is still a ton of room for growth in his game. I think he has a huge upside.

2. Calvin Anderson (Superior): If it wasn't for an injury during his senior season, Anderson could very easily be my top prospect. He started the season off as one of the most dominant players, while breaking the Superior career scoring record. It seemed like heading into his senior season he had expanded his game and was scoring almost any way possible. There were games this season where he got hot from three right away and it opened up different scoring opportunities. He is really good at using his size to take advantage of mismatches. I would speculate that if he was able to stay healthy that Superior could have made a run at making it to state. Committed to Minnesota-Duluth.

3. Stephen McGee (Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin): The 2026 6'10" forward was dominant on the defensive end for his entire career. He finished his career with 295 career blocks (3.04 blocks per game over his career). McGee found himself getting a lot of attention this season which made it tough for him to get many clean touches. The nice thing with him is that he is capable of stepping out and knocking down shots on the perimeter, which seemed to be some of the only times he had clean looks this season. The crazy part about McGee is that he still has so much potential to work with, that his ceiling is very high heading into college. Committed to Northern Michigan.

4. Ray Brau (Hibbing): Brau solidified himself as a scholarship level player this season. The 6'7" forward finished his junior season with 2012 career points and 1000+ career rebounds. He appears to be on pace to break the Hibbing career scoring record set by Ayden McDonald (2432 points). He garnered a lot of attention from opposing teams this season, and safe to assume that will continue next season. Around the hoop tends to be his safe space to operate, but has proven that he's expanding to be comfortable on the perimeter as well. Averaged 26.3 points, 12.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game, while shooting 63.2% from the floor and 35.3% from three. I haven't heard of any offers yet, but I'd assume they are on their way if they aren't already offered.

5. Isaiah Asuma (Cherry): One of the best shot making guards in the Northwoods and helped lead his team to a 5th straight state tournament appearance. The 6'0" 2027 guard finished his junior season with 2383 career points, and could potentially pass Isaac Asuma for the all-time leader at Cherry. For a smaller point guard, Isaiah makes some college level moves. That bodes well for him at the college level to find different ways to score with his size, and he's able to get to the hoop. It's nice to see him be an athletic guard and get up for dunks. Was needed to be very active in all aspects of the game for the Tigers to get back to state, and it led to a couple triple-doubles for him this season. Currently holds an offer from Minnesota-Duluth.

6. Trevor Robert (Menomonie): Provides good size standing at 6'7" and able to be a wing/forward. He's another prospect that has potential that is so high. We were able to see some of what he could be during his junior season, but there's still so much room to grow. He did shoot 33.3% from three point range this season. Averaged 18.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game. Runs the floor very well in transition and moves well without the ball in the half court. Athletic enough to get up and finish with dunks, but has enough touch to be able to finish through contact and in traffic. I haven't heard of any offers yet, but scholarships should be coming soon.

7. Jaxon Boschee (Bemidji): Finished his career as the leading scorer in Bemidji High School history with 2265 points. Provides good size at the guard position with being 6'3" and able to get his shot off over most defenders. He had a couple games this season where he really went off and showed how he was able to hit tough contested shots. Three level scorer and able to create space and get his shots off quickly. Good with the ball in his hands and has a couple of go to moves that he is able to get to his spots with. Committed to Bemidji State.

8. Ethan Marta (Westwood): The Mr. UP award winner during his senior season really carried the Westwood team over the last two seasons. A bigger guard who could potentially play multiple positions at the college level. Scores in a variety of ways. He helped lead the Patriots to a State Semi-Final appearance as a junior. Marta finished his career as the 11th UP player to score over 2000 career points, finishing with 2069 points. Committed to Michigan Tech.

9. Terrance Nolan (Houghton): The lone 2028 player on this list. Put up some very impressive numbers for a sophomore getting his first real varsity run this season. I enjoyed watching him play in a couple of games this season and he was fun to keep track of. Seemed like he could light it up from three at any given moment in a game. He scored 43 points with 10 three pointers against Lake Linden-Hubbell (school record for made three pointers in a game). In the same game he tied a Michigan state record of 7 made three pointers in one quarter. The biggest thing that will determine what level he can end up at is going to be his physical strength. No offers currently, but I've heard plenty of schools who are keeping an eye on his development.

10. Kam Kroll (Northwestern): Kam proved it again this season that he can carry a team. The lefty is a solid player who is capable of getting hot and hitting tough shots. He has a good strong frame that allows him to be a three level scorer. Standing at 6'3" he is able to take advantage of mismatches. Averaged 20.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game, while shooting 33.5% from three. To my knowledge there are no scholarship offers as of now. Based on what I've heard since AAU started up this spring, I would assume as we get into the summer the scholarship interest will pick up.
